Social Studies is most commonly recognized as the name of a course or set of courses taught in primary and secondary schools or elementary, middle, and secondary and tertiary schools around the globe. Many such courses are interdisciplinary and draw upon various fields, including sociology but also political science, history, economics, religious studies, geography, psychology, anthropology, and civics. By contrast with sociology, social studies courses often consist of a general and opinion-led discussion of topics without reference to academic theorists or research.
Social studies is a branch of study which deals with Human Beings – their behavior, growth and development, relationships, resources they use and the various institutions they require to function and carry on their life smoothly. For example family, school, workplace, government, judiciary, recreation clubs, etc. These aspects of life are inter-related and interdependent on one another.
The importance of social studies in schools is the study of where we are today, and where we could go in the future based on historical events that have happened in the past. In School the topic of social studies covers all of the major content areas from mathematics, to English and foreign languages, science such as biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, literature, art and music.
The inclusions of Social Studies in the curriculum right from primary to secondary classes signifies the importance of the subject and the role it plays in a student’s life. Social Studies is incorporated in the school curriculum through a combination of subjects like – History, Geography, Cultural Studies, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, etc
